If you lose your parents, life becomes really difficult. Who takes care of you, who looks after your education, who pays your school fees, who provides your medical care—and who is simply there for your worries and problems? Here in Nakuru, it is the NGO Utunzi Kwa Watoto along with the wonderful Bena. And that is why we support them. Because we know that Bena is there for these little girls—and for around 100 more children. And that day after day.

Lena is visiting a school far in the north west if Namibia. Backpacks for the grade three of the Omuhoro school. Although the official start of the school day is at 9 a.m., most children don’t arrive until around 11 a.m. This is because they have to help at home in the morning—especially with taking care of the goats—and often walk several kilometers to get to school.
A little over 90 children attend the school, from first to third grade. Classes run until 3 p.m., after which the children receive a simple meal, usually maize porridge, before heading back home.
Very few children continue on to a secondary school after completing third grade. Most families make their living from livestock, primarily goat farming.

It’s accomplished. We spent months getting our shipment of items (backpacks, bags, and clothing – thanks to @tatonkacom and the @climbing_team_germany to Chile. All the bureaucracy, the back-and-forth of countless documents and applications, lasted seemingly forever. Thanks especially to the people on-site who stood before customs many times and always helped us. Now we know the procedure and how to obtain customs relief. It will take a certain amount of time each time, but we will reach the kids at the Laura Vicuña School in Puerto Montt, led by the Salesians Don Bosco. In Chile, young people with intellectual or physical disabilities receive little support. The school offers them a chance at a better future, from care to training.
